So my housemate brought home a copy of The Guardian today and I read this article (which I could only locate a copy of on the Voice UK)on the tobacco industry, it broke my heart and I wanted to share it. It is amazing how much we take for granted in the western world, from diamonds to cigarettes; our indulgences are the pains of the third world. Justice seems far.
I'm sure you could give me hundred of examples just like this.

Yep, I've got a few examples of similar stories. This isn't a personal one, but have you seen Slumdog Millionaire? An amazing movie based on the slums of India, in which orphaned children have their eyes burnt out for the purpose of begging. Horrendous.
ReplyDeleteWhen I was in Bali earlier this year, I strongly felt the vast divide between us and third world countries. Streets are crowded with children who are constantly begging, trying to get you to give them 5 cents for crappy junk no one wants. Instead of being in school, these kids follow tourists around all day to try and alleviate a tiny portion of the extreme poverty they are surrounded by. It's a vicious cycle that continues into their teens and adulthood. Many resort to petty crime, mainly theft, and others go through a lot worse.
You're right, there are many examples. Too many.
It's interesting that the millions of examples that do exist have only prompted one response. It is an excellent indication of how much we choose not to care.
